a new dawn to a new day to a new year…

jan 1st, 2018….

“Dawn, from an Old English verb dagian: “to become day”, is the time that marks the beginning of twilight before sunrise. It is recognized by the appearance of indirect sunlight being scattered in the atmosphere…”

it’s been a bit of a bucket list thing to experience the new years day sunrise at rannoch moor in the highlands and 2018 being a significant year for me was a good one to go for it. a slight problem with the expected cloud cover in the early hours but what we did experience the dawn rising to daylight.

the official sunrise time was 08.55 so up at 6.30am (not great after the late night for hogmanay celebrations), drive the 45 mins to rannoch to be there before 8am in good time for the dawn to be rising.

sharing the road with numerous other weary travellers heading over the moor we spotted camper vans snuggled into prime spots to see the dawn of the new year. never been too much into the idea of camper vans although if a classic VW camper was left in our car park that would be rather good and anyone who uses theirs to share such a wilderness experience is ok in my book,

the sheer scale of the moor is something quite grounding especially in the half light where when the wind drops the silence is only broken by the occasional call of a lone grouse.

one year will camp out to experience the old year fading into the new, we may not have had a sunrise this time but the emotive atmosphere of the moor awakening can never disappoint, one more box ticked off the bucket list…!!
